New Year's Day, 2023, marks the 250th anniversary of John Newton's great hymn, Amazing Grace.
The hymn was written in the town by curate—and former slave ship captain—the Reverend John Newton, for his sermon at St Peter and St Paul Church on 1 January 1773.The familiar tune we sing today is much more recent, dating from the early 19th century.
