Seventh Day Baptists are not the same

The Seventh Day Baptist denomination, to which I belong, is small and, because of its name, often confused with the much larger and better known Seventh-day Adventists. A post at SDB Forums has once again emphasized that error. There are really quite a few differences - one of which is that Adventists are not Baptists. Here is a comparison of the beliefs of Seventh Day Baptists with those of Seventh-day Adventists. For those with sufficient interest: the SDB Statement of Belief and the SDA Fundamental Beliefs. Also a brief history of Seventh Day Baptists.

    Hello,

I am a Seventh-day Adventist who reads your blog occasionally. I think that from the outside what we agree on is quite significant. Jesus, Sabbath, Second Advent, Bible, Immersion Baptism, etc...

But a little closer look indicates what you and I both know...that there are significant differences. EGW, Sanctuary, Death, Polity, etc....

I think a healthy view would acknowledge both our differences and similarities. I do appreciate the SDB view of "theological freedom" that comes from your Baptist heritage. When I used to live in Huntsville Alabama I would occasionally visit the Paint Rock, AL SDB church and found the people very accepting and friendly.

As you probably know, it was a SDB woman who originally introduced the Sabbath to some of the early Adventists who took on that Bible truth...So Adventists will forever be indebted to your church...

    God bless...

  2. Thanks for the comment. A frequent SDB experience is to tell someone "I am a Seventh Day ..." and they fill in Adventist even when it was Baptist that was uttered. If we seem somewhat over anxious about the distinctions, that is a large part of the reason.

I'm glad you have found your Seventh Day Baptist encounters pleasant.

  3. Im SDA. Came across your webpage as I was doing research on Sabbath keeping churches. Let me just correct you on what Mrs. White says the third angels message is.

"Several have written to me, inquiring if the message of justification by faith is the third angels message, and I have answered, It is the third angels message in verity" E G White, Review and Herald April 1, 1890.

Now I'll quote from out Bible study guide. "Central to out mission is the proclamation of justification by faith alone, the great news that salvation comes only through the grace of God poured out upon undeserving sinners and not through any works on our part" Discipleship lesson 12, March 15, 2008.

And we believe that we are judged according to the light that we received. Mrs. White says that there are even people who havent even heard of Christ who will be saved. So no, we do not believe that we are the only ones who will be saved
