Have mercy upon us

God did not abolish the fact of evil: He transformed it.
He did not stop the crucifixion: He rose from the dead.

O holy God, Holy and strong, Holy and Immortal, have mercy upon us.
By the wood and the iron,
By the wormwood and the gall,
By the water and the blood,
Have mercy upon us.

Dorothy L. Sayers, The Greatest Drama Ever Staged, 1938, The Emperor Constantine, 1951
